Play-Wel for Mai-Wel 2016
The Mai-Wel Group’s corporate sports day, Play-Wel for Mai-Wel, made a triumphant return to Maitland Indoor Sports Centre on the 10th of November, raising more than $18,500 for the not-for-profit organisation that provides services and support to more than 1,300 people with a disability across the Hunter.
Back for its seventh year, the annual fundraiser was proudly presented by Maitland-based property investment business, In Properties for Investors, and saw 16 teams with players from more than 40 local businesses battle it out in a round robin competition of indoor netball, soccer, cricket and dodgeball. At the end of the day, it was team ‘TLCC United’ (Tranter Lawyers and Maitland Carpet Court) who triumphed as the Champion Sporting Team, winning every one of their four games.
“For TLCC United, it was a win for the ages…the old ages that is! Our team had an average age of well over 40, playing people half our age, and somehow we still managed to win the sporting trophy. Maybe forty is the new twenty after all!” said Tranter Lawyers Principal, Matthew Tranter.
“When we started playing in Play-Wel seven years ago, it was difficult to commit to having such a large number of employees out of the office at one time, so our solution was to make a team with Maitland Carpet Court. Even though we could field our own side now, we are having too much fun to make a change and it has been great to see more businesses joining forces to form ‘super sides’.
As business owners, I think it is important to give back to the community that makes our work possible and Mai-Wel really is synonymous with Maitland, helping those in need of support in so many different ways. Huge kudos to the In Properties team for getting behind this great fundraiser which just gets bigger and better every year,” Matthew said.
Competition was fierce both on and off the court with players also competing to raise the highest amount of funds in a bid to take home the Fundraising Champion trophies. For the second year in a row, Alicia Parish from Commonwealth Bank proved to be the fundraiser to beat, defending her title as ‘Individual Fundraising Champion’ with an impressive tally of $1,710 raised. The trophy for ‘Team Fundraising Champion’ also returned to the defending champions, Commonwealth Bank, who raised a total of $2,740, followed closely by Pitcher Partners and BNI Express.
In Properties for Investors Director, Janine Harris, thanked everyone for another great day of competition and laughs. “Play-Wel is over for another year and we would like to thank everyone involved. There is a lot of work that goes into organising an event like this, but when the day arrives, it's the players and supporters who make it so special. Well done everyone. See you all next year!” said Janine.
The combined fundraising efforts of the Play-Wel teams and individuals raised more than $18,500 which will be allocated to Mai-Wel Creative Arts, providing all-inclusive art and performance opportunities for people with a disability or disadvantage in our local community. The Mai-Wel Group would like to convey sincere thanks to all participating individuals, teams and event sponsors; In Properties for Investors, The Good Guys, Maitland Indoor Sports Centre and X Advantage.
