The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was launched in the Hunter area in July 2013 for people receiving specialist disability services. Those living in the Lake Macquarie Local Government Area (LGA) entered the scheme in 2014 and those in the Maitland LGA in mid-2015. By July 2018, all eligible residents nationally will be covered by the Scheme.
