Dave's dream realised
In October, 2013 Dave approached Hunter disability service, The Mai-Wel Group to provide tailored support to help him achieve his bike restoration goal. Together with support worker Danny O’Toole, Dave was able to spend four hours a week working on restoring his pride and joy.
Dave’s wife, Julie Hughes, admits it has always been a dream to be on the back of a bike with Dave.
In December, 2015 that dream was realised as Dave completed his bike restoration and Julie and Dave were able to enjoy the engine starting up together.
“Before Dave’s Acquired Brain Injury, he would pull bikes apart and put them back together again. It has always been a real passion of his”, said Julie.
“Without Mai-Wel working with Dave, it wouldn’t have happened. The experience of being able to complete the project has given him a new lease on life”.
The bike will take pride of place, sitting on a trolley in Dave and Julie’s dining room.
“I had a collection of bike parts in five different locations that we went through to find all of the parts. We came across old records and all, it was a real trip down memory lane”, said Dave.
The next goal for Dave is to register with a bike club and show the bike at different events.
