Independent work a dream come true for Leigh
When Leigh commenced with MWLFS, she indicated that she would like to become a cleaner. MWLFS organised workexperience for Leigh to get an understanding of what therole required. In late 2013, Leigh was successful in gaining a part-time position with Active Cleaning with the support of MWLFS.
As Leigh has schizophrenia, it was very difficult for her to adjust to the early morning starts required by the industry. A MWLFS case manager provided transport for Leigh in the initial stages of her employment, to assist with adjustment to the 5:00am starts. The support continued for several weeks with Leigh’s case manager staying with her for entire shifts until Leigh felt confident to work independently.Leigh has since been made an independent worker meaning she no longer requires assistance from MWLFS to maintain her employment.
Leigh has bravely shared her experience of gaining employment as a guest speaker at ‘Working Well’; inspiring others with an illness to pursue their employment goals.Mai-Wel LabourForce Solutions, provides specialist employment services that assist people with a disability or those who experience barriers, in finding and keeping a job, while helping employers meet their labour needs.
