Mai-Wel Get Started recipient of $30,000 Beyond Bank grant

27-Sep-2018

The Mai-Wel Group is thrilled to be the recipients of a $30,000 Beyond Bank Australia Foundation Grant to support young people with disabilities in their transition from school to work through Mai-Wel LabourForce Solutions’ (MWLFS) ‘Get Started’ initiative.

Since launching in 2011, Get Started has assisted in excess of 300 Year 11 and 12 students to successfully transition into the post-school vocational option of their choosing, including vocational education and training, work experience and employment opportunities.

Students can be referred by their high school to participate in Get Started, which includes centre and community-based training opportunities delivered one day per week over 22 weeks between March and September.

Mai-Wel’s CEO, Pennie Kearney, says Mai-Wel is proud to support local young people through this unique initiative and is thankful for the support of Beyond Bank to provide the resources needed to deliver the very best service for school-leavers through to 2020.

“The transition from school to work is such an important time for students. It is an exciting time but it can be quite confronting too, especially for those with disabilities,” said Ms Kearney.

“Get Started is a service that we are so incredibly proud of. Unfortunately, there are many people in our community who are being left out. Not everyone is funded by the NDIS and it’s hard for those people to find support, like Get Started, to assist them to achieve their goals.

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this financial support from Beyond Bank which will enable us to plan for the extra resources required to deliver our Get Started supports over the next two years.”

“As a customer-owned bank, we are very focused on building better, stronger communities and that means ensuring that everyone has an equal chance to pursue their personal dreams,” said Mr. Peter Rutter, General Manager, Community Development, Beyond Bank.

“Mai-Wel’s support for young people is simply outstanding and we are thrilled to be partnered with an organisation that is doing so much to enrich the lives of those who are at risk of being left out as they take the big step from school to the workforce.”

Beyond Bank have been ongoing supporters of Mai-Wel through their volunteering program and support of the Annual Raffle.

Students interested in receiving supports from Get Started should contact Mai-Wel’s Schools Transition Coordinator, Catherine Crowley, on (02) 4015 8400.
