Anne Duncan named Volunteer of the Year 2019
Like most not-for-profit organisations, The Mai-Wel Group is built on the compassion, support and dedication of volunteers.
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, dedicated volunteer Anne Duncan has been awarded The Mai-Wel Group’s Frank Higgs Volunteer of the Year 2019 award.
Anne’s career of volunteering spans almost 5 years with Mai-Wel, specifically working with The Hill, Mai-Wel’s lifestyle and leisure centre, where she assists in the support of participants in recreational activities and daily tasks.
“I love the people. The participants and the people I work with are lovely,” says Anne.
Since she started volunteering, Anne has continued to go above and beyond in her role, much to the appreciation of Mai-Wel participants and staff. She initially began volunteering as a requirement of the Newstart Allowance but soon realised the value of her time was worth much more.
“I value the satisfaction you receive from it (volunteering). We can help in ways that you don’t initially realise.”
In 2018/19, Mai-Wel’s volunteers donated 12,196 hours of their time, an increase from 11,300 hours donated in 2017/18. Mai-Wel volunteers give their time through face-to-face support of participants and staff, administrative tasks and event support.
Anne says she is overwhelmed and very touched to be recognised as the 2019 Volunteer of the Year.
The Mai-Wel Group’s Frank Higgs Volunteer of the Year Award honours Frank Higgs, a dedicated volunteer and Mai-Wel’s longest serving Board member of more than 22 years. Frank’s association with Mai-Wel began in the 1960’s when his daughter, Ruth, attended the Mai-Wel School at South Street, Telarah. In 1998, Frank and his wife Betty were granted life membership with The Mai-Wel Group for their loyalty and support of the organisation throughout the years. The award has been named after Frank due to his long-standing support of Mai-Wel and advocacy for people with a disability in the Hunter.
The Mai-Wel Group wishes to congratulate Anne on what is a wonderful achievement, and give thanks to the hard work of all of our volunteers.
