Flexible Living Options
The Mai-Wel Flexible Living Options Division aims to provide accommodation support services for people with a disability in the least restrictive manner. Each resident is supported to live as independently as possible within the community.
The Flexible Living Options division consists of:
Residential Services
Mai-Wel offers a range of residential services to people with a disability. Our residential homes include a central facility, which offers two separate group homes and five separate homes located in the Maitland area. Residents are accommodated in these facilities according to personal choice and support needs.
The Central Facility – The Lodge
The central facility provides morning, afternoon and overnight support to clients. Additional day time support is provided on weekends, public holidays and other occasions where residents are unable to attend work.
Located at 115a South Street, Telarah, this centre offers modern, attractively decorated shared lounge / common room areas. Each resident enjoys an individual bedroom with shared bathroom facilities. The centre has a spacious common room and a large outdoor area. Residents jointly care for the Mai-Wel pet dog - "Jake".
Group Homes
Three separate homes and a cluster of four units are located throughout the Maitland area which provide accommodation for residents who require a variety of support from drop-in, sleep-over to active night support. The residents in these homes are assisted with meal preparation and day to day residential duties.
These homes are modern and comfortable and allow residents the opportunity to live more independently in the community.
The Respite Centre
The Mai-Wel Respite Service offers short term relief from care of the person with a disability for the family or carer. Mai-Wel Respite Centre Programs are designed for people 18 years and over who have an intellectual disability.
Our Respite Care Programs are carefully designed by staff who are qualified in the training and direct care of people with disabilities. A number of flexible support packages can be organised, according to the individual needs of the clients and their families.
The centre has four beautifully furnished modern single bedrooms, staff bedroom, kitchen, bathrooms & lounge room.
The Mai-Wel Respite Centre is not directly funded and therefore carers must apply for funding via a respite brokerage service. Contact details for local Respite Brokerage Services are:

The Mai-Wel Respite Service aims to;
- Provide carers with quality flexible respite options.
- Teach clients practical skills for independent living such as grocery shopping, meal preparation, washing, ironing and general housekeeping.
- Teach clients interpersonal skills which may assist them to live independently or in a group. These include negotiating, social appropriateness, compromising, establishing and following house rules.
- Ensure a balance is maintained between training activities and social/community interaction.Enhance the skills of people with a disability so they can contribute and participate more in family tasks and activities such as meal preparation, housekeeping or social planning.
- Teach clients practical skills to provide a possible stepping stone from living with family to living independently or in supported accommodation.
The Accommodation Outreach Program
The Accommodation Outreach Program (AcOP) supports clients who live independently or with family or friends in Maitland, Cessnock, Merriwa, Dungog, Muswellbrook, Singleton, Scone, Port Stephens or Upper Hunter Local Government Areas.
The Program offers a range of flexible and responsive services based on the individual needs of clients and their families and carers.
The Accommodation Outreach Program aims to assist clients to maintain and enhance their independence through informal and responsive support options identified through individual planning and review. Priority is given to people with a disability living with ageing carers.
The Accommodation Outreach Program assists Clients:
- To maximise independence and participation in the community.
- To enhance the quality of health and wellbeing.
- To achieve more independent living arrangements.
- To negotiate problems that may arise.
Activities and services include; Independent Living Training, Personal Assistance Support, Social and Recreational Activities and Family and Carer Support Assistance.
